Pan Vision in partnership with developers Tactile Entertainment have announced the release of their debut title for the iPhone & iPod Touch, Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas, which is now available to download from the App Store for $0.99.

PvNvZvP is a classically addictive physics-based demolition puzzler based on the historic and well documented conflict between the afore mentioned armies. Fight for dominance and take control of three factions, form alliances, and use each armies unique abilities to eliminate the fourth faction.

The game utilizes the simple touch and drag interface to select your projectiles trajectory and fire power. As we mentioned, each faction also has something a little special to offer:

• Burn away bamboo and wood using an incendiary rum-soaked pirate.
• Obliterate reinforced roofs with a well-placed ninja chop.
• Devastate hideouts with explosive cluster-zombies.
• Seek out hard to reach foes with the guided fart panda (yep, that’s right…).

PvNvZvP comprises 45 levels over 4 campaigns, ensuring hours of destructive fun in which players can fine-tune their tactics (and their aim) and share their high scores via Apple Game Center.

Look out for PvNvZvP HD coming to iPad in the very near future.

Toronto’s Gamercamp, a two-day celebration of games in Toronto, offered several live demos of indie games during its first day. Two standout titles for me were “Sword and Sworcery” and “Dyad.”

“Sword and Sworcery,” coming out for iphone, ipad, and ipod Touch. A joint effort between Superbrothers and Capy “Sword and Sworcery” is a 2D pixel art adventure game that does away with tutorials in favour of focusing on atmosphere, mood, and player exploration of the gameworld. The visuals and sound are exceptional and I for one cannot wait to explore the world of “Sword and Sworcery.”

“Dyad” is a philosophical puzzle, shooter, racer hybrid that has players control a ball of light with arms (tentacles?) that can “latch” onto objects on a track to propel itself forward. I got a chance to play this game on Day 2 of Gamercamp and controlling the ball of light that flies down the track is simple but the strategy involved to get to the end of the track before time runs out becomes increasingly complex, challenging, and rewarding.

Other games presented at Gamercamp:

An example of the unique innovations on display at Gamercamp. Normative’s CityState takes games outside and uses GPS for a ARG (alternative reality game).

“CityState”: a hybrid realty based game that has players competing for control of different parts of a city. Featuring radar functionality. Little detail was given on “Citystate” so it is difficult to classify it or even describe how the game plays. This one is definitely an early work in progress.

“The Depths to which I sink”: a puzzle game from Big Pants Games that uses 3-D tech to allow for depth of movement. The player controls a ball that must smash windows situated at differing depths while avoiding obstacles.

“Zombie Dots”: a simple browser based game from Form and Method has the player play as a red dot (a Zombie) or a blue dot (a survivor). Each dot moves along a grid and can push gray dots (crates) to together to form barriers to help with survival or push gray dots apart to break barriers in order to eat the survivors.

Cephalopods Co-op Cottage Defence from Spooky Squid Games was a real crowd pleaser, it was available for demo on a stand-up, coin-op arcade unit and featured an innovative co-op play mechanic.

“In this game, players must strike a balance between offensive and defensive roles, each taking turns using the hammer to fix barricades or the shotgun to destroy incoming squidy things. While the shotgun and hammer have complementary strengths and weaknesses there’s only one of each, so the players must both agree to trade successfully. Knowing when to stick together, when to split up and when to trade tools is essential to getting a high score.” – (Source: 2011 Independent Games Festival)

DDGW’s Game To Watch For – They Bleed Pixels

Being developed by Spooky Squid Games (see above) and music produced by the Electric Playground’s Shaun Hatton (aka DJ Finish Him), is a fast-paced, gothic, low-fi pixel art, platforming beat’em up that will be coming to the Xbox Live Indie Marketplace.

Latest game release of indie developer spielwerk features brand new game mechanics

The Austrian game development team that brought you the iGlowStick releases its fourth app on the iTunes AppStore on 29 October 2010: ‚Primal Plant Attack‘ is an action-packed game that challenges your dexterity with an awesome fresh concept: bouncing!

The game’s protagonist, a primal carnivorous plant, may seem harmless – yet its huge appetite for meaty food poses a threat to the species that inhabit its neighborhood. And it attacks its prey in a vicious way: as food doesn’t simply come around in the desired abundance, evolution gave the primal plant a unique and innovative, yet malicious gift: the ability to bounce.

Simple controls, exquisite design, fresh game mechanics
spielwerk once again created a game that combines simple controls and exquisite design with innovative game mechanics tailor-made for touch screens.

Simply slide your finger over the screen to make the plant bounce! Attack delicious dishes in midair with this evil skill: grab insects, birds, bats and even pterosaurs to fill your primal plant‘s stomach, provide it with energy and most important: make it grow to the next step in evolution. Within four stages of increasing difficulty, assorted yummy creatures will fall prey to your hunger for meat. But beware: some will try to fend you off with their freezing and burning abilities.

The fascinating prehistoric setting with matching music and sounds and the convincing cartoon graphics combined with the awesome bouncing mechanics make Primal Plant Attack a fun and challenging game experience. Let your friends witness the evolution of your plant and post your high scores on Facebook. Primal Plant Attack will hit the AppStore on 29 October 2010.

About spielwerk
Martina Misar-Tummeltshammer, Gernot Dannereder and Franz Hess, who have known each other since university, started spielwerk with their puzzle app 3D logic in May 2009. The amazing success of their second app iGlowStick allowed them to concentrate on game development full-time. spielwerk’s iGlowStick has registered 4.5 million downloads so far, which made it the worldwide number-one free app for some time. Primal Plant Attack is the fourth app of spielwerk that shows the game developers’ technical, design and production skills at their best and will again make our fingertips glow.

“How d’you like them Apples?” – Naughty Bear

505 Games and developer Artificial Mind and Movement have announced that they are bringing the consoles most demented plush toy to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Originally released on the 360 and PS3 consoles, Naughty Bear takes place on a paradisiacal island where teddy bears live in harmony. Players take control of the main character, Naughty Bear, a disgruntled teddy bear with a tendency to be mischievous. The goal of the game is to complete certain tasks to earn “Naughty Points”.

The game was met with overwhelming negative reviews; Meta Critic scored it at a 43 out of 100, and many other publications found it overly disappointing0 and repetitive, despite the games frivolous amounts of fluffy ultraviolence.

Although Tim Woodley, Head of Global Brand Management at 505 Games, thinks differently. According to Woodley, “In the last six months Naughty Bear has captured the imagination of a very wide fanbase and very quickly become an icon within the gaming world and a beacon for the disenfranchised and the disgruntled everywhere,”. Woodley goes on to add that, “With the launch of the iPhone version, Naughty Bear fans can finally, and quite literally, take matters into their own hands…We knew that Naughty Bear was perfect for on-the-go gaming and we have put a lot of time into refining the experience to reflect the new format, controls and objectives,” said David Osborne, creative director at Artificial Mind and Movement.

The new iPhone and iPod Touch game will feature a unique control system tailored specifically for the Apple devices touchscreens and a top-down viewpoint, which will also allow the camera to zoom in and out for up-close for Naughty Bears trademark kill moves.

The new game will also feature a vast array of weapons, objects and scare tactics for gamers to use while they cut, slash and maim their island cohabitants in the quest for Naughty Points.

Hopefully the iPhone/iPod Touch version of Naughty Bear is received better than its console version. One of the major problems gamers had with it was that they found it to be highly entertaining for the first couple of hours, but beyond that, the game became increasingly repetitive. Due the the nature of most mobile gamers, playing only short spurts of gameplay (riding in transit, on a subway or while they have a few minutes to kill), this could benefit Naughty Bear and reduce the feeling of repetition as gamers will pop in and out of action throughout their day, instead of long spans of gameplay.

Naughty Bear is available now for Apple’s iPhone/iPad & iPod Touch through the App Store for US$2.99
